All Queensland state schools must follow procedures that include guidelines about developing a sun safety strategy in relation to outdoor activities and school uniforms.

These procedures are:

How schools promote sun safety

  • Educational programs on sun safety and preventive measures
  • maximise the use of available shade for outdoor activities and plan activities so that the time spent in the sun between 10am and 2pm is reduced (as much as is practical)
  • consider sun protection in school uniform designs
  • require students to wear protective clothing including appropriate hats
  • require primary school students to wear swim shirts during all water-based activities, with the exception of competitions and carnivals
  • encourage the wearing of swim shirts during all water-based activities in secondary schools
  • provide students with an SPF 30+ broad spectrum water based sunscreen when needed
  • consider sun protection in relation to parents and citizens' association projects and activities.
  • Parents, teachers, ancillary staff and volunteers are also encouraged to act as role models for students in relation to sun protection strategies.
