*“Mathematics is one of
the essential emanations of the human spirit, - a thing to be valued in and for
itself, like art or poetry” - *Oswald Veblen

The study of mathematics at Clontarf Beach
State High School can prepare learners for the entire range of employment
opportunities that depend on some knowledge of mathematics; from biomedical
engineering to trade and commerce.

## Junior students

Junior students build on skills and conceptual understandings that commenced in primary school. Students need to spend time developing their strengths and interests, to help them choose a specific mathematics pathway in their senior studies.

Online learning resources compliment in-class written work to enable all students to discover mathematics applications in the real world.

## Senior students

Senior mathematics pathways include three distinct streams, and one additional elective:

- Prevocational Mathematics
- Mathematics A
- Mathematics B
- Mathematics C

Prevocational Mathematics is useful for students who intend to complete TAFE courses, and is also for those who wish to develop their practical and life skills.

Mathematics A enhances knowledge of mathematics in personal issues such as finance, applied geometry and statistics.

Mathematics B focuses on the advanced mathematical competence skills that are required to understand and solve new problems, many of which are a characteristic of our technological dependency.

Mathematics C prepares students who intend on pursuing future studies in mathematic or scientific fields, where new applications of mathematics are being developed.

## Additional Opportunities

All Clontarf Beach State High School students have the opportunity to compete in annual Mathematics Competitions such as:

- Australian Mathematics Competition
- Rio Tinto
- ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) Mathematics Competition
