Music fosters creative and expressive communication.
It allows
students to develop musicianship through making (composition & performance)
and responding (musicology). Through composition, performance and musicology,
students use and apply music elements and concepts. They apply their knowledge
and understanding to convey meaning and/or emotion to an audience.
Students use
essential literacy skills to engage in a multimodal world. They demonstrate
practical music skills and analyse and evaluate music in a variety of contexts,
styles and genres.
A course of
study in Music can establish a basis for further education and employment in
the fields of arts administration, communication, education, creative
industries, music management & music promotions, public relations and
science and technology.
Junior Curriculum
Our Junior Music program
is designed to be a fun, engaging and developmental experience.
Year 7
Year 7 Music is offered as an extension subject for students who successfully audition in Year 6. This is a year-long course designed for students with a strong interest in music.
Students develop foundational practical and performance skills while being introduced to a range of musical styles and concepts. Learning experiences focus on performance, listening, and basic music theory through a variety of instruments and ensemble activities.
Year 8
Year 8 Music is continuation from the Year 7 Music program.
Students further develop practical performance skills on instruments such as guitar, ukulele, and keyboard, and are also exposed to drum kit, bass, and electric guitar. The course builds students’ understanding of music theory, listening skills, and ensemble performance.
Year 9
Year 9 Music
is an elective course. It is designed to extend on the introductory work of
year 8 music by further developing practical, performance skills, music
knowledge, listening and exposing students to the creative area of composition.
Students will study units including “Popular Music”, “Music in Society” and
“Film & Gaming Music”. These units are designed to appeal to the interests
of this age group.
Senior Curriculum
Our
Senior Music program consists of the subjects Year 10, 11 & 12 Music and Year
11 & 12 Music in Practice. Year 11 & 12 Music are general subjects,
whilst year 11 & 12 Music in Practice are applied subjects.
Year 10
Year 10 Music is an elective course which builds
upon the foundation work of year 9 music. Students continue to further develop
and refine their performance skills whilst also extending their composition and
responding/listening skills. Topics
studied include: Music ‘s Classic Hits, World Music & Australian Music.
Year 11 & 12
In
Year 11 & 12 Music, students
will study 4 Units. These units are Designs, Identities, Innovations and
Narratives. Students will extend their knowledge and application of the
different music elements, when performing, composing and responding to music.
Assessment will include performance, composition, an integrated project and an
examination.
Year 11 & 12 Music in Practice, provides students with opportunities
to engage with music and music productions and where possible interact with
practising artists. Students gain practical, technical and listening
skills. They will create, perform,
produce and respond to their own and others’ music work in class, school and
community settings. The course is designed around core and elective topics,
with assessment involving projects, performances, compositions, extended
response tasks and investigations.
Extra Curricula and other activities
There are a
wide variety of extra curricula activities that Music students can become
involved in. Examples of these activities include our Semester 1 and 2 Music
Showcase evenings, lunch time gigs, school and wider community events, our
Instrumental program and school choir.
